Steel Surface Finishes Explained: 2B, BA, No.4, Mirror

The surface finish of stainless steel is more than a cosmetic choice — it affects corrosion resistance, cleanability, reflectivity and price. Here are the finishes you will meet most often.

2B — a smooth, uniform matte-grey finish produced by cold rolling and light rolling. It is the most common finish for general industrial use, easy to form and economical.

BA (Bright Annealed) — a bright, reflective, mirror-like finish achieved by annealing in a controlled atmosphere. Ideal for appliances, decorative trim and food contact surfaces.

No.4 — a brushed, satin finish with a fine 120–180 grit grain. It hides fingerprints well and is widely used in kitchen equipment, railings and architecture.

Mirror (No.8) — a highly polished, near-perfect reflective surface used for decorative panels, elevators and luxury interiors.

Buyer tip: specify the finish clearly in your inquiry. The finish affects both appearance and price, so confirming it early avoids rework and disputes.
