Steel Quality Control: Inspections, Certificates & Third-Party Testing
When sourcing steel from overseas, quality assurance is non-negotiable. Here is what a reliable supplier should provide.
Mill Test Certificate (MTC) — the official document confirming chemical composition and mechanical properties for each batch. Always request it.
Third-party inspection — independent agencies such as SGS or BV can verify dimensions, surface quality and quantity at the warehouse or factory before shipment. This gives you an unbiased check of the goods.
Dimensional checks — thickness, width and tolerance are measured against the agreed standard (ASTM, EN, JIS). Even small deviations matter in tight-tolerance applications.
Surface inspection — checks for scratches, pits, rust or damage that could affect performance or appearance.
Buyer tip: work with suppliers who openly accept third-party inspection and agree in advance on the inspection standard and acceptance criteria. This protects both sides and speeds up the transaction.
